In the ASJA scholarship program, particular emphasis was placed on learning the Japanese language so that the international students can deepen their understanding of Japan. ASJA scholarship recipients generally spent one year after arriving in Japan receiving Japanese preparatory education at the Japan Student Services Organization Tokyo Japanese Language Education Center. From the 2014 fiscal year, ASJA-MEXT students now spend six months after arriving in Japan receiving Japanese preparatory education at the center.
