    ASJA International Secretariat established. Opened in the Japanese Language School of the International Students Institute (currently the JASSO Tokyo Japanese Language Education Center). One full-time staff member.

    Five countries were members at the time of establishment (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand).

    2004

    Myanmar joined the institution.

  • April

    2007

    Cambodia and Vietnam joined the institution.

  • June

    2008

    The institution paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda.

    Laos joined the institution.

    Brunei joined the institution.

    The institution paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.
