ASJA International Secretariat established. Opened in the Japanese Language School of the International Students Institute (currently the JASSO Tokyo Japanese Language Education Center). One full-time staff member.
Five countries were members at the time of establishment (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand).
